이 데이터베이스에는 미국 정보 공개법(U.S. Freedom of Information Act, FOIA)을 다방면으로 활용하여 수집된 총 500,000페이지에 달하는 가장 중요한 극비문서가 포함되어 있으며 이들 중 다수는 여기에서 최초로 공개되는 자료이다.

각 컬렉션에서는 대통령 지시, 비망록, 외교 공문서, 회의 기록, 독립 보고서, 브리핑 자료, 백악관 발표자료, 이메일, 기밀 편지 및 기타 비밀 자료를 포함한 광범위한 정책 문서를 제공한다. 또한 소개 자료, 연표, 용어집, 에세이를 포함한 참고자료와 서지자료는 각 컬렉션의 정황 및 배경을 설명해 주고 있다. 각 주제 분야에서 최고의 학자들이 문서를 선별하였다. 각 아이템은 서로 다른 20개 이상의 필드에 맞게 초록과 색인이 구축되어 검색이 가능하도록 하였다. 각 문서의 전체 이미지는 GIF나 PDF 형식으로 볼 수 있다.

DNSA는 20세기에서 21세기 역사로 들어서는 기간 동안 미국의 해외 정책, 정보, 보안 문제 분야에 대한 가장 효과적인 연구 및 교육 자료이다.

National Security Archive 소개

1985년 설립된 National Security Archive는 미국 정보 공개법(U.S. Freedom of Information Act, FOIA)을 가장 많이 성공적으로 사용한 기관으로 명성을 얻었다. 미국 정보 공개법(FOIA)의 전문 지식을 통해 이 기관은 Christian Science Monitor에서 소위 "미국 정부의 범위를 넘어서 수집된 극비 국가 보안 정보의 최대 컬렉션"이라 불리우는 데이터베이스를 구축하였다.
